Sculptra
Sculptra is a FDA-approved injectable product for reducing fine lines and wrinkles of the face and creating a fuller, more youthful appearance.  Also known as the "liquid facelift", Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid, a well known material that has been used in medical products for decades.   Sculptra corrects facial lines and folds due to aging by stimulating the skin to produce collagen and thereby replacing collagen that is lost over time.  Unlike fillers such as Restylane and Juvéderm, Sculptra is not injected specifically into lines and wrinkles, but globally all over the face in small amounts to restore volume and provide a lifting effect.   This results in diminished lines and a more youthful appearance.  Patients at Manhattan Beach Dermatology have achieved excellent results in the face including the areas around the eyes, temples, and mouth, and throughout the cheeks and lower face.  It adds volume to the cheeks, to the folds around the chin, and to the hollow areas around the eyes.  Sculptra injections are done monthly for 3 to 5 treatment sessions.  Results from Sculptra appear within the first few treatment sessions and can last 2 years or more.  Results with Sculptra are not immediate, in contrast to fillers such as Radiesse, Juvéderm, and Restylane.  Sculptra treatments, over several injection sessions, result in a gradual increase in skin thickness, improving the appearance of wrinkles, folds, and thinned areas of the face.  The results achieved by Sculptra are natural looking and appear slowly over several months time — no sudden dramatic change in appearance so no one will say you look like you have had something done.   For those patients wanting more immediate benefits, bothersome lines can be specifically injected with Juvéderm or Restylane at the same time Sculptra is being injected throughout the face.  Periodic touchup treatments with Sculptra can be done to maintain your results.  During the procedure, topical anesthesia is used, and Sculptra is mixed with lidocaine to further decrease the discomfort of the injection.  Downtime can be 2 to 3 days, sometimes longer if there is significant bruising from the injection.  More information on Sculptra can be found at www.sculptra.com
