Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a genetic immune system disorder that leads to the development of thick, inflamed, red skin patches with overlying white scale. It typically involves the elbows, knees, and scalp, but severe cases can be more generalized. Psoriasis can also affect the joints, causing joint destruction and pain. Skin in psoriasis undergoes rapid proliferation as a result of increased inflammatory signals from the immune system to the skin cells. Stress, injury, infection, medications, or trauma can worsen the condition. Treatment options include topical medications, ultraviolet light treatment, and traditional oral anti-psoriatic medications such as methotrexate or etretinate as well as the new generation of injectable biologic agents such as Enbrel, Humira, and Stelara.
