Pruritus
Pruritus, or itch, is defined as a unpleasant sensation that provokes the desire to scratch. Dry skin is one of the most common causes of pruritus. Itching may be associated with many dermatologic conditions including infestations, psoriasis, contact allergies, and eczema. Certain systemic diseases have long been known to cause pruritus that ranges in intensity from a mild annoyance to an intractable, disabling condition. Generalized itching may be caused by liver disease, kidney failure, medications, cancer, diabetes, or thyroid disorders. Laboratory evaluations are in order for patients with generalized itching without a rash to search for a possible cause.
