Lentigo (Liver Spots)
A telltale sign of aging, so called "liver spots" are brown spots that have nothing to do with the liver.  Lentigos are most commonly seen on the forearms and backs of the hands and are associated with chronic sun exposure.  Many therapies are available for the treatment of brown spots including surgery, freezing, lasers, light devices such as IPL (intense pulsed light), creams, and skin peels. Careful attention must be paid to the patient's skin type and underlying skin conditions to avoid exacerbation of these spots during treatment.  Some pigmented lesions may need to be biopsied prior to treatment to be certain the spot is not skin cancer.
