Juvéderm Ultra and Juvéderm Ultra Plus
Juvéderm is a hyaluronic acid-containing dermal filler that is an injectable gel offering a safe and effective nonsurgical option for smoothing facial wrinkles and folds, usually in the lower half of the face and under the eyes. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring carbohydrate found in human joints and skin that binds water, thus plumping and providing support to facial lines and folds. Depending on the person, results may last from 6 to 12 months, about twice as long as older collagen based fillers that are rarely used now. Studies have shown that, with repeat injections over time, there is some stimulation of the patient's own collagen production so that results may last longer after each follow up injection. Juvéderm injectable gel is available in two formulations, Juvéderm Ultra for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, and Juvéderm Ultra Plus, a thicker, more robust formulation for volumizing and correcting deeper folds and wrinkles. These products are most often used for lip augmentation, nasolabial folds (the smile lines between the side of the nose and the corner of the mouth) and for adding volume to the lower face (called the "injectable thread lift"), which can create a lifting effect. New forms of Juvéderm contain lidocaine to decrease the discomfort of injection. To further lessen discomfort, nerve blocks or a topical numbing cream can be used. There can be 2-3 days of downtime after injection, depending on the patient, with possible redness, swelling, and bruising, which can be covered with makeup.
