Junctional Nevus
This type of mole is common in younger people and looks like a flat pigmented spot that is usually darker in color than freckles and sun spots.  They should be fairly round in shape with uniform dark pigmentation, unlike melanomas or atypical nevi that have a somewhat irregular shape or variegated pigmentation. In an effort to detect melanoma at the earliest sign, junctional nevi are biopsied if they are new or displaying any of the ABCDE signs of melanoma: asymmetry, border irregularity, color variation, diameter greater than 6 millimeters, evolving in size, shape or color.
