Impetigo
Impetigo is a superficial bacterial infection of the skin, usually caused by
staphylococcus aureus. It usually is characterized by a yellow, crusted, oozing area of the skin with some redness. Impetigo is contagious from person to person and easily spreads to new areas on the body, especially if there are any cuts in the skin where the bacteria can enter the skin. It is important to therefore avoid direct contact with other people, wash hands frequently, and change all personal items (such as towels or bedding) regularly while infected. Usually, the contagious period ends within two days after beginning treatment with oral and/or topical antibiotics.
