Herpes Simplex
Herpes simplex virus type 1 is the cause of cold sores around the mouth while genital herpes is usually caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 infection. These infections develop usually from direct skin to skin contact and begin as grouped, red bumps that develop into clear blisters that scab over before healing spontaneously in 2-3 weeks. Treatment with oral antivirals can speed the healing of lesions, but the medication needs to be taken at the very first sign of a herpes breakout. After initial herpes exposure and outbreak, some unfortunate patients develop recurrences of their lesions during times of stress, illness or prolonged sun exposure. Some patients with frequent recurrences of either oral or genital herpes take preventive daily oral therapy to prevent breakouts from developing. Fortunately, these antiviral medications are very safe and have few side effects.
