Dysport
Dysport is a medication that is in the same class as Botox and, like Botox, it is injected into the face to soften facial expression lines. Dysport was approved by the US FDA in 2009, but it is not new, having been available in Europe for almost 20 years. Dysport's safety data and side effect profile are similar to Botox. Many wrinkles are caused by repeated contraction of facial muscles, which cause creases in the skin that gradually deepen over time. Dysport is injected into these muscles and works by blocking the nerve impulse to the muscle, thereby weakening the muscle. By relaxing the muscles that cause these lines, the creases themselves will soften and sometimes even disappear with time. Dysport is especially helpful for those habitual frowners and squinters who often appear stressed when they are actually just concentrating as Dysport can weaken those overactive facial muscles and break the habit of frowning. Results are dramatic but appear natural, giving you a relaxed appearance that can last for 3-5 months. Mostly people will notice that you look "rested" or "like you just returned from a vacation." Repeat injections should be done periodically to maintain the effect. Dysport is most commonly used to treat forehead creases, frown lines between the eyebrows, and crow's feet around the eyes. It can also be used to raise the arch of the eyebrow, to lift the corners of the mouth, and to lessen wrinkles of the upper lip and sides of the nose. Dysport also decreases excessive sweating in the underarms, palms, and feet. Many patients have concerns about appearing frozen or lacking facial expression with both Botox and Dysport; however, with proper placement of the injections, results look natural so that you can still smile, look surprised, and even angry if you need to. There is usually no downtime as bruising from the injection is minor. Now that it is available in the US, patients are finding that Dysport is as effective as Botox and patient satisfaction with the product is very high. If you are a regular Botox user, it is worth trying Dysport to see if it works any faster or if results last longer than Botox, as this can sometimes be the case.
