Dry Skin (Xerosis)
Dry skin, known medically as xerosis, is seen commonly during the winter months when the air is cold and humidity is low. Dryness is one of the most common reasons for itchy skin, and it is most often seen on the legs and arms. Skin that is dry also takes on a more aged appearance. Dry skin is characterized by multiple tiny cracks in the outer skin layer, which can lead to skin infections by invasion of bacteria, viruses, or fungi. There are a host of over the counter and prescription strength products to treat dry based on your skin type, age, area of the body involved, and personal preferences.
