Cysts
Cysts are common skin growths characterized by an under the skin lump that can sometimes become ruptured and inflamed. A cyst starts from a single pore with becomes plugged, leading to the formation of a sac-like structure that grows out from the epidermal lining of the follicle. In fact, you may be able to see a dilated pore overlying the cyst, and you may be able to squeeze some of the cyst contents out of the pore. Cysts are treated surgically by making an incision in the skin overlying the cyst and extracting the sac and its contents. The skin is then closed with stitches. Inflamed cysts cannot be excised and are treated by lancing and draining the pus and cyst contents. The wound is left open to heal. If the cyst later regrows, excision can be done at that time.
