Alopecia Areata
This is a type of hair loss that usually is characterized by one or two round bald spots with no associated symptoms. It is thought to be an auto-immune disorder in which antibodies attack the hair follicles resulting in hair shedding without regrowth. Fortunately, this is a temporary condition as there is no scarring of the hair follicle. While stress is often considered a possible cause, in rare cases alopecia areata can be associated with certain internal abnormalities. A topical regimen with monthly cortisone injections can help facilitate the regrowth of the hairs.
