Actinic Keratosis
Actinic keratoses (AKs) are precancerous lesions commonly seen on the face, scalp, forearms, and backs of the hands as a result of chronic sun exposure. AKs are rough, scaly, red or tan areas that, if left untreated, can turn into squamous cell carcinoma, a potentially serious form of skin cancer. For this reason, all AK lesions need treatment. There are many effective and easy treatments for AKs including cryotherapy (freezing), photodynamic therapy (using a laser or light device), chemical peels, and topical medications.
